The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
This diagram illustrates the creation phases of a kind of desert called rain-shadow desert.
Overall, the formation takes place in two sides of mountains called windward and leeward sides which are thousands of kilometres away from each other. On the sea-side, there are 5 stages from winds approaching the sea to rain falls of the clouds. And on the other side of the mountain, 2 stages make rain-shadow desert creation happen.
In the first part near the coast, the winds which approach the sea move upward toward the mountain. when the winds go up,that makes the air moist and gets cold. Where the cloud formation happens. At the top of the mountain, because of the cool air and existance of clouds, rain starts to fall.
Over thousands of kilometers toward the mountains, there is no cool weather. The environment is completely dry so the dry air progresses over the mountain downward. Once the dried winds reach the inland sites, the rain-shadow desert takes place and forms.
What works: You wrote an overview, paraphrased the title rather than copying it, and met the 150-word minimum. You correctly count five stages on the windward side and two on the leeward side, and you follow the diagram's order from coast to desert.
Problems:
What works: The structure is clear (introduction, overview, two body paragraphs). The windward and leeward split is logical, and you use some sequencing language such as "Once" and "At the top".
Problems:
What works: You know the key terms (windward, leeward, rain-shadow desert, inland) and your meaning is mostly clear.
Problems:
| Written | Correct |
|---|---|
| existance | existence |
| kilometers (inconsistent with "kilometres") | kilometres |
| dried winds | dry winds |
What works: You attempt relative clauses ("which approach the sea") and subordinate clauses ("because of…", "Once…"), and many simple sentences are accurate.
